Chapter Nineteen

Lady Wentford

Weeks passed, and Eugenie began to wonder if the night out in the woods had only been a figment of her imagination. As much as she had hoped to spend more time with her husband and get to know the man she’d married, he seemed to have other plans. And whatever they were, they seemed to exclude her.

Once the doctor gave her leave to walk the grounds once again, Eugenie spent many afternoons outside with Liam. The boy always stayed close by her side, his pale blue eyes watching her as though he feared she might lose her way again. His concern warmed her heart, and she thanked him graciously for seeing to her safety so diligently.

At her praise, little Liam’s chest puffed out and a sense of pride came to his young eyes. He seemed deeply committed to the task of keeping her safe that only his mother’s stern voice could ever dissuade him from Eugenie’s side.

“I hope he doesn’t bother you, my lady,” Isabelle said on one such occasion when she’d sent her son inside to help in the kitchen. “He can be quite serious sometimes, getting lost in the stories he invents.” A doting chuckle left her lips. “He sees himself as a knight in shining armor.”

Eugenie smiled. “He’s the shiniest one of them all,” she told her lady’s maid. Although her mind had not been able to rebut her suspicions, Eugenie had decided to listen to her heart when it came to whom to trust. Granted, she still knew very little about her lady’s maid’s past; however, there was something utterly truthful and devoted in Isabelle’s blue eyes that Eugenie could no longer bring herself to suspect anything untoward from the young woman.

The benefit of the doubt, she whispered, reminding herself that suspicions were not facts and could lead to wrong conclusions.

Out by herself, after Isabelle had called her son back inside to finish his food, Eugenie walked the grounds in silence, her hands resting leisurely on her small belly. Her child, however, seemed to be sleeping late that day as her hands could not detect the faintest kick.

As always, her heart cringed at the thought that something might have gone wrong. However, Eugenie quickly reminded herself that this was not the first moment of silence. All would be well as it always had been.

Rounding the main building from the gardens, Eugenie walked past the stables just as a rider on a dapple gray horse came trotting into the courtyard. A stable boy ran forward and took the reins, and Eugenie squinted her eyes, trying to see who had come to visit. A guest in itself was such an unheard of occurrence that, for a moment, Eugenie felt quite overwhelmed at the thought of receiving a caller.

For weeks, she’d had no one for company but the servants who bustled around the ancient fortress as well as on occasion her husband. A part of Eugenie longed to converse with another; someone of her own standing
